Correspondent Anne-Marie Green reports on this chilling case, which led investigators to Qinxuan Pan, an MIT graduate student in artificial intelligence. Pan, described as a genius with a dark side, was able to outsmart authorities for months, fleeing across nearly a dozen states and using his tech skills to evade capture, including shutting off GPS in the vehicles he used to escape.

The investigation took a crucial turn when detectives, led by David Zaweski, discovered a link between Pan and Jiang’s fiancée, Zion Perry, who had crossed paths with Pan years earlier at MIT. Despite their apparent lack of connection, investigators found that Pan had been secretly fixated on Zion and obsessed with Jiang, driving him to meticulously plan Kevin’s murder.

In the months before the shooting, Pan had fired .45 caliber bullets into four homes in New Haven, possibly to mislead investigators into thinking Kevin’s death was just another random shooting. The episode provides unprecedented access to the investigation, including exclusive interviews with lead detectives and Pan’s former attorney, who described Pan’s intelligence as being “on another level.”
