He questioned whether Kristen could have fired the large-caliber revolver that killed her, suggesting that her husband may have been involved in her death. However, Colby’s defense attorney, Cassy Zeigler, argued that Colby had no reason to harm his wife and immediately called for help when he found her.

The case took a unique turn when authorities ordered an “autopsy of the mind”—a psychological autopsy—aimed at determining Kristen’s state of mind before her death. This was the first time such a method was used in Kansas in a criminal case.
