On April 2, 2013, Desiree and her husband, Scott Sunford, were shaken by a break-in at their home. Fearing for their safety, the couple installed a new home security system, but they made a fateful decision to only have alerts sent to their phones instead of the police. This decision would lead to tragedy. Just days after the system was set up, Scott left for a funeral. When the alarm was tripped in the middle of the night, Scott thought it was his dog and ignored it.
When Scott returned the next evening, he found the back door of his home broken into again, and his wife’s lifeless body, shot multiple times, was found inside. The investigation took a shocking turn as authorities began to question Scott’s behavior, which seemed disturbingly calm.
Further investigation revealed a complicated love triangle involving Scott, Desiree, and 23-year-old Paige Blades. While Paige had lived with the couple and had an intimate relationship with both, the shocking revelation came a year later when Paige, the unexpected tipster, confessed that her friend Marty Grismer had murdered Desiree. Marty, obsessed with Paige, claimed he killed Desiree to allow Scott and Paige to be together—though it turned out that the child Paige was pregnant with was not Scott’s.
After a year-long investigation, Marty Grismer was arrested, and evidence pointed directly to him as the murderer. Despite his denial, Grismer pled guilty in an Alford plea, acknowledging the prosecution’s overwhelming evidence and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
This Dateline episode features interviews with key figures, including law enforcement officials, and reveals the disturbing dynamics between the individuals involved. To this day, some still suspect that Paige, Scott, and Marty may have conspired to kill Desiree, but lack of evidence keeps them free.
