On November 13, 2016, Dr. Sills called 911 after discovering his wife at the bottom of the stairs. He claimed Susann had tripped after suffering from a migraine over the weekend. But upon investigation, Orange County Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives Eric Hatch and Dave Holloway discovered inconsistencies. While initial signs pointed to an accidental fall, other evidence suggested foul play, including a ligature mark around Susann’s neck, which did not align with a simple fall. Her daughter, Mary Katherine, mentioned that her mother was wearing a scarf around her neck when found, which raised more questions about the cause of death.

As the investigation progressed, Susann’s death was officially ruled as ligature strangulation, and her husband, Dr. Sills, became the prime suspect. However, the defense raised an unusual theory involving the family dogs. Defense attorney Jack Earley suggested that the dogs could have tugged on Susann’s scarf after she fell, but this idea was met with skepticism.
