On May 8, 2018, Brian Fanion dialed 911 to report that his wife, Amy, had shot herself after an argument about his retirement plans. However, when Massachusetts State Police arrived at the scene, they found Amy’s body on the dining room floor, and her death did not add up to the story Brian had told. Detective Brendan O’Toole, who investigated the case, found the gunshot wound inconsistent with a self-inflicted injury. The question soon became: from what distance was Amy shot?
A critical clue emerged in the form of gunshot residue, or the lack thereof, on Amy’s body. In typical self-inflicted gunshot wounds, gunshot residue leaves a distinct pattern called stippling on the skin. However, no such residue was found on Amy’s body, suggesting that the wound was inflicted from a distance. This led investigators to suspect that Brian was involved in her death.
As the case progressed, Brian was arrested and charged with murder. At trial, the defense introduced a crime scene analyst named Alexander Jason, who argued that Amy’s thick hair could have blocked the gunshot residue, preventing it from appearing on her skin. To demonstrate this theory, Jason visited a gun range with 48 Hours and fired a .45 caliber gun through a mound of hair to replicate the conditions at the crime scene. The results were striking, showing a significant difference in the presence of gunshot residue when hair was involved.
48 Hours contributor Nikki Battiste reports on this intriguing case, featuring interviews with investigators, defense experts, and key figures involved in the investigation. The episode examines the role of forensics and the questions that remain unanswered about Amy’s death.
