When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the Howard family’s home in northern Idaho, they found Dan Howard distraught, claiming that he had discovered his wife’s lifeless body in their bathtub with a gunshot wound to the head. He insisted that she had taken her own life, but things didn’t add up. There was a gun found in the bathtub, but it had no prints or DNA linking it to Dan Howard. Additionally, strange details at the crime scene raised suspicions—such as a packed duffle bag ready to go and a clothes dryer running with clean towels.
Police quickly began to question Dan’s story. As a former law enforcement officer, Dan Howard had knowledge of how to stage a crime scene. Investigators, including retired Kootenai County Sheriff’s Detective Sergeant Ken Lallatin, believed that Dan’s actions were far too calculated and pointed toward a staged murder, not a suicide.
48 Hours correspondent Peter Van Sant takes viewers inside the investigation, highlighting the key pieces of evidence and interviews with law enforcement officers who uncovered a chilling truth about Kendy Howard’s death.
Tune in for “The Bathtub Murder of Kendy Howard” this Saturday at 9:00 PM ET/PT on 48 Hours for a powerful look at how a former law enforcement officer may have used his skills to cover up a heinous crime. The episode will also be available for streaming on Paramount+.
