ABC 20/20 “Murder at the U” March 6 2026

ABC’s 20/20 presents a new true crime investigation titled “Murder at the U,” airing Friday, March 6, 2026, at 9/8c. The broadcast examines the 2006 killing of University of Miami football player Bryan Pata, a rising defensive lineman whose promising career appeared to be headed toward the NFL. The episode explores the shock and confusion that followed his death and the long search for answers that kept the case in the spotlight for years.

The program revisits the night Pata was shot and killed outside his apartment complex. According to investigators, Pata had just pulled into the parking lot when he was shot once in the back of the head in what authorities described as an execution-style killing. He was only 22 years old. The sudden violence stunned teammates, family members, and the wider college football community.

A Promising Athlete and a Mystery That Gripped Miami

Bryan Pata had established himself as a standout player at the University of Miami and was widely viewed as a future NFL prospect. Known among teammates for his personality and presence on the field, Pata’s death left a deep impact on those who knew him. Family members later described the lasting emotional toll, including the grief felt by his mother and relatives in the years following the tragedy.

The case quickly drew intense public attention. Investigators faced pressure to solve the crime as speculation spread about possible motives and suspects. Over time, the investigation became one of the most talked-about unsolved cases connected to the University of Miami football program.

Investigation, Trial, and Lingering Questions

Authorities eventually charged former Miami Hurricanes player Rashaun Jones with second-degree murder in connection with the 2006 shooting. Prosecutors argued that tensions between Jones and Pata, including personal conflicts and jealousy involving Pata’s girlfriend, provided a possible motive. Much of the case relied on circumstantial evidence, witness testimony, and years of investigative work.

However, the trial ended in a mistrial when jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision. Several jurors later said they believed prosecutors had not proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt, pointing to gaps in the evidence and questions surrounding witness testimony and the investigation itself. With the case unresolved, prosecutors indicated their intention to retry the case.

“Murder at the U” revisits the killing of Bryan Pata, the investigation that followed, and the legal battles that continue nearly two decades later. The episode airs on ABC and will also be available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu.
