Canada’s Unmarked Graves
When archaeologists discovered what they thought to be 200 unmarked graves at a former school in 2021, they rekindled interest in one of Canada’s most heinous historical periods. More than 150,000 indigenous children were detained in Canada’s residential school system after being forcibly removed from their homes, according to an Anderson Cooper investigation. The producers are Michael H. Gavshon and Nadim Roberts.
Sharswood
When Lesley Stahl visits Fred Miller and his family in the sizable house in southern Virginia that they bought to host family gatherings, she discovers that the ancestors of the family were slaves on the very property. As a result of their research into old records and hiring of a genealogist, Miller’s sister and cousins were able to prove that their great-great-grandparents Violet and David Miller were kept as slaves on the plantation, which was then known as Sharswood. Archaeologists have discovered that some of the plantation’s enslaved men and women lived in the abandoned building behind the main house. The Miller family’s purchase of this home gave them access to their past, which many African American families find challenging to obtain and which they had never discussed. This segment is two lengths. Shari Finkelstein is the producer.
