Survival of the Friendliest
Investigating how dogs separated from wolves and acquired what one geneticist refers to as “friendliness mutations,” Anderson Cooper reports on the connections between the evolution of dogs and humans. The same genes that are deleted in some individuals with a condition known as Williams syndrome contain those mutations. Producer Denise Schrier Cetta is involved.
Comparative Oncology
According to Anderson Cooper, some of the most exciting genetic studies in humans and dogs have to do with cancer. Scientists, medical professionals, and veterinary professionals collaborate to research and treat cancers that are similar in both people and pets in the emerging field of comparative oncology. They are applying what they learn to expedite treatments for both species that could save lives. Producer Denise Schrier Cetta is involved.
Wild Horses
Sharyn Alfonsi travels to the Wyoming Honor Farm, a state-run minimum-security facility in the heart of horse country that participates in a programme to reduce the number of wild horses by having inmates train the animals. According to federal land managers, there are almost three times as many wild horses on public lands as there should be, and if their population growth is unchecked, it can double every five years. The producers are Michael Karzis and Katie Kerbstat.
