What Happened to Brittanee Drexel and Killer Raymond Moody?
Brittanee Drexel, a 17-year-old girl from Chili, New York, went missing on April 25, 2009, during a spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Despite their objections, she joined friends on the trip, ultimately vanishing after leaving a hotel alone. Surveillance footage captured her last known movements, but her whereabouts remained a mystery until her remains were discovered in the South Carolina woods in May 2022.
Despite extensive investigations, no leads emerged until 2016, when a prison inmate claimed she had been abducted and killed. This revelation prompted the FBI to classify the case as a homicide.
In May 2022, Raymond Moody, a registered sex offender in the area, was arrested on charges of murder, kidnapping, and criminal sexual conduct in connection with Drexel’s disappearance. He confessed to the crime, leading authorities to her skeletal remains in a wooded area near Georgetown, South Carolina, about 33 miles from where she vanished.
Moody’s arrest and subsequent confession shed light on the harrowing events leading to Drexel’s death. He kidnapped her from the Myrtle Beach strip, raped her, and ultimately ended her life out of fear of repercussion. Advanced cell phone tracking technology provided crucial evidence, corroborating Moody’s account of the events.
The investigation revealed that Drexel had been seen at the Blue Water Resort before disappearing. Despite extensive searches and interviews, the case went cold until the inmate’s revelation in 2016.
The subsequent arrest and confession of Raymond Moody provided closure to Drexel’s family, who had long hoped for answers. Moody pleaded guilty to the charges in October 2022 and was sentenced to life in prison.
