On August 24, 2024, at 9:00 PM ET/PT, CBS will air an encore presentation of “Missing Marsha” on 48 HOURS. Correspondent Peter Van Sant will revisit the perplexing case of Marsha Brantley, who vanished from Cleveland, Tennessee, in 2009, and the ensuing legal battle against her husband, Donnie Brantley.
The case gained attention due to its unusual circumstances. Marsha Brantley’s disappearance went unnoticed for months, with no one reporting her missing until her hairdresser, Kelly DeLude, grew concerned over a missed appointment. DeLude’s inquiries led her to contact the authorities, setting the investigation into motion. Donnie Brantley initially claimed that Marsha had left him, which did not prompt him to report her missing. His inconsistent statements about her whereabouts and belongings raised red flags for investigators.
Despite the suspicions, the case faced significant hurdles due to the lack of a body, which made it challenging to prove that a murder had occurred. Donnie Brantley was arrested in 2013, but the charges were dropped due to insufficient evidence. However, in 2014, District Attorney General Stephen Crump refiled charges against Brantley. The case took another turn in February 2018, when Crump unexpectedly dropped the charges just before the trial, leaving many shocked and the case unresolved.
The broadcast will provide an in-depth look into the case, featuring interviews with those involved and exploring the reasons behind the dramatic shifts in the legal proceedings. “Missing Marsha” will also be available for streaming on Paramount+.
