Jebel Musa in Morocco and Mount Hacho near Ceuta are candidates for the southern half of the pair known as the Pillars of Hercules. The Pillars of Hercules historically refer to two promontories that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar: one on the European side and the other on the African side. Traditionally, the Rock of Gibraltar is considered the northern pillar. Jebel Musa and Mount Hacho are both vying for recognition as the southern pillar. This legendary gateway was known in ancient times as the limit to the known world, marking the boundary between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.
