Justine was killed in 2003 by her boyfriend, Danny Bezemer, and his roommate, Brandon Fernandez, who buried her in a shallow grave while she was still alive, according to her autopsy. In 2005, both men pleaded guilty to her murder and were sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. However, a change in California’s murder law in 2020 has opened a potential loophole, allowing Fernandez to petition for his conviction to be overturned and to be re-sentenced as an accessory after the fact. If successful, Fernandez could be released on time served.

Justine’s parents, Don and Lynnette, along with her sister Christine, are determined to keep Fernandez behind bars. “We’re fighting for her, that’s why we’re here. She doesn’t have a voice, so we’re her voice,” Christine Vanderschoot shares with Morales.

48 Hours follows the Vanderschoot family’s emotional journey as they advocate for justice, push for changes in the law, and raise awareness about teen dating violence.
