ABC 20/20 “Since You’ve Been Gone” July 18 2025
ABC’s 20/20 returns Friday, July 18, 2025, with a gripping encore presentation of Since You’ve Been Gone, airing from 9:01–11:00 p.m. EDT. The two-hour special revisits the mysterious disappearance of 17-year-old Alissa Turney and the decades-long search for answers. What began in 2001 as a suspected runaway case has since evolved into one of the most puzzling and emotionally charged true crime stories in recent memory.
Alissa was last seen on the final day of her junior year in Phoenix, Arizona. A handwritten note suggested she had run away, but inconsistencies soon raised red flags. As the years went by, a tangled web of evidence emerged, including a disturbing stockpile of pipe bombs discovered in the home of her stepfather, Michael Turney, and a bizarre false confession from a known serial killer.
Correspondent John Quiñones leads the episode, which builds on ABC News’ original reporting. For the first time since his acquittal on charges related to Alissa’s murder, Michael Turney sits down for an exclusive interview. His 2009 conversation with ABC News played a major role in reigniting interest in the case and ultimately led to his prosecution more than a decade later.
The program also features interviews with lead detectives Stuart Somershoe and William Anderson, who remained committed to the case long after others considered it cold. James Turney, Michael’s son and Alissa’s half-brother, shares his unique perspective from within a family divided by suspicion and grief. The episode includes insight from attorneys on both sides of the courtroom, as well as true crime podcaster Ottavia McHenry, whose coverage brought renewed public attention to the case.
Since You’ve Been Gone offers a deep dive into a haunting mystery that still lacks resolution. While Michael Turney was found not guilty, questions remain, and the search for the truth about what happened to Alissa Turney continues.
Tune in to 20/20 Friday night on ABC, with next-day streaming available on Hulu.
