Tim Leung is a Madison, Wisconsin–based technical trainer at Epic Systems, one of the world’s leading providers of electronic medical records software. Since joining Epic in 2010, he has played a key role in training developers, technical services staff, and customer administrators on the programming languages and system tools that support large healthcare organizations.
His work focuses on both technical depth and instructional clarity. Leung teaches programming concepts and system configuration across Epic platforms, including Foundations, Security, Data Courier, and IntraConnect. His training responsibilities include instruction in M language programming along with exposure to technologies such as C# and TypeScript. The role requires not only strong technical expertise but also the ability to translate complex systems into practical knowledge for a wide range of learners.
From Engineer to Educator
Before joining Epic, Leung built a diverse professional background that spans engineering and classroom teaching. Early in his career, he worked for more than nine years as a digital hardware engineer at ViaSat, where he designed and tested components for military communications systems. His engineering work involved VHDL and Verilog programming, FPGA design using platforms such as Xilinx and Altera, and board-level schematic and testing tools.
After his time in engineering, he transitioned into education, teaching high school mathematics in California. At schools including Guajome Park Academy Charter School and Escondido High School, he taught Algebra, Geometry, and foundational math courses. In addition to classroom instruction, he coached wrestling and baseball, further reflecting his commitment to mentorship and student development.
Education and Technical Foundation
Leung earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego, where he also participated in campus activities including the lacrosse team and student organizations. His engineering education provided the analytical and technical foundation that shaped his early career in hardware design and systems work.
He later completed a teaching credential in Mathematics and Physics from California State University San Marcos. His training included extensive classroom observation hours and CLAD certification, preparing him to teach diverse student populations. The combination of engineering expertise and formal teacher training continues to influence his approach to technical instruction.
Community Service and Personal Initiatives
Beyond his professional roles, Leung has remained active in community service and charitable work. While living in California, he served on the City of Oceanside Community Relations Commission from 2001 to 2008. In that role, he helped coordinate programs including an annual Martin Luther King Jr. scholarship initiative that distributed between $30,000 and $60,000 each year to local students.
He has also pursued personal fundraising efforts, including a project titled “40 Races for my 40th Birthday,” which raised awareness and support for health-related causes. These activities reflect a continued interest in community engagement and public service alongside his technical career.
