ABC 20/20 “Her Last Call” June 19 2026

ABC’s 20/20 revisits one of Florida’s most heartbreaking abduction and murder cases in the all-new two-hour special “Her Last Call,” airing Friday, June 19, 2026, at 9:00 p.m. EDT on ABC and streaming the next day on Disney+ and Hulu. Co-anchor Deborah Roberts reports on the murder of Denise Amber Lee and the lasting impact of a crime that continues to raise questions nearly two decades later.

Denise Amber Lee was a 21-year-old wife and mother living in North Port, Florida, when she was abducted from her home on January 17, 2008. The case quickly became a nightmare for her family. When her husband, Nathan Lee, returned home from work, he discovered their two young sons alone in the house and immediately realized something was terribly wrong. A frantic search began as family members, friends, and law enforcement raced to find Denise before it was too late.

Among those searching was Denise’s father, Rick Goff, a veteran sheriff’s detective. As authorities worked to piece together what had happened, a series of critical 911 calls began to emerge. One of the most chilling came from Denise herself. Using her abductor’s cellphone, she managed to place a desperate call for help while being held captive. The brief conversation provided investigators with valuable information but also highlighted the urgency of the situation.

Additional 911 calls followed from witnesses who reported seeing suspicious activity. One eyewitness provided information that Denise’s family has long believed could have altered the outcome if communication failures had not occurred during the emergency response. The handling of those calls later became the subject of intense scrutiny and led to changes in emergency dispatch procedures.

The investigation ultimately focused on Michael King, who was arrested and charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder. Prosecutors presented evidence showing that King abducted Denise from her home before killing her later that day. Following his conviction, he was sentenced to death.

For years, Denise’s family continued to advocate for improvements to emergency communications systems while keeping her memory alive. The case became a powerful example of how critical emergency response can be during active abduction investigations.

In March 2026, nearly 18 years after Denise’s murder, Michael King was executed. Both Nathan Lee and the couple’s son attended the execution, marking the final chapter in a long legal process that had stretched across nearly two decades.

“Her Last Call” features new interviews with Nathan Lee and Denise’s son as they reflect on the execution, Denise’s legacy, and the impact her loss has had on their family. Deborah Roberts also examines the events of the day Denise disappeared, the investigation that followed, and the 911 calls that remain central to discussions about the case.

The special not only revisits the details of the crime but also explores how Denise’s family transformed tragedy into advocacy, helping inspire reforms designed to improve emergency response systems and potentially save future victims in critical situations.
