Today’s Final Jeopardy
Alphabetically the first German city in encyclopedias, it was also the first one taken by the Allies in World War II
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Aachen
Final Jeopardy Explanation
Aachen is a German city in North Rhine-Westphalia that is the westernmost city in Germany. It borders Belgium and the Netherlands to the west.
During World War II, it was the first German city to be captured by the Western Allies on 21 October 1944, where the locals greeted the troops as liberators.
As a result of American artillery fire and demolitions carried out by the Waffen-SS defenders, what little of the city was left was destroyed—in some areas completely—during the fighting.
While the Germans surrended, their resolute defence seriously derailed Allied plans for further advance into Germany.
