Nick and Stranger in the House ought to have been getting ready for church on a Sunday morning in 2010. Instead, Heidi and Nick both made frantic 911 calls to the police, reporting that someone was breaking into their house. Nick had a gunshot wound to the leg when they arrived on the scene, and Heidi had been fatally shot. In the course of their investigation, officials found that in addition to the couple’s severe financial difficulties, they were also about to lose their homes the following day. Nick moved on to marry and have children with a woman named Rachel when the investigation became unproductive due to a lack of leads
Years go by with no new developments in the case, and it appears that Nick’s life is back to normal. until Rachel discovers something in Nick’s sock drawer that upends all of her preconceived notions about her spouse.
The initial interviews on this two-hour episode of “20/20” are with Nick’s second wife Rachel Firkus, the top detectives from the St. Paul Police Department (Sgt. Niki Sipes and Sgt. Jim Gray), and Nick’s defence attorneys Joe Friedberg and Robert Richman. The programme also included interviews with former person of interest Michael Pye, Ramsey County Assistant Attorney Elizabeth Lamin, and former Assistant Ramsey County Attorney Rachel Kraker. Additionally, the episode includes unique, covertly taped discussions between Nick and Rachel in which she accuses him of being responsible for the death of Heidi. “20/20” will run on ABC on Friday, April 14 (9:01–11:00 p.m. EDT), and on Hulu the following day.
What Happened in the Courtney Coco Case?
Nicholas Firkus was found guilty of first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree deliberate murder. Ramsey County Chief Judge Leonardo Castro sentenced him to life in prison with no chance of release on Thursday, the statutory term for premeditated murder.
Firkus told police after the murder that on April 25, he wrestled with an intruder, the pistol went off, and his 25-year-old wife was fatally shot in the back inside their house on Minnehaha Avenue near Fairview Avenue. According to Nicholas Firkus, he was then shot in the thigh and groyne, and the invader escaped.
The murder occurred one day before the couple was to be evicted from their home due to a foreclosure.
During the trial, the prosecution argued that Firkus shot his wife because he had withheld knowledge of their foreclosure and probable eviction from her, and that he was “desperate, ashamed, and had run out of time.”
Firkus maintains his innocence and did not testify during his trial.
