Today’s Final Jeopardy
In March 1519, these were again seen in mainland North America for the first time in 10,000 years with the arrival of 16 of them
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Horses
Final Jeopardy Explanation
Horses originated in North America but had become extinct within the area around 10,000 years ago, likely due to changes in the climate and overhunting by humans.
Spanish explorers and conquistadors reintroduced the horse to the Americas. In March 1519, the Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés landed in Mexico with 16 horses, marking the first time horses had been seen in North America for approximately 10,000 years. The horses played a significant role in Cortés’s conquest of the Aztec Empire.
After their reintroduction, horses rapidly spread across the American continents, changing the lives of Native American tribes in the Great Plains region, who integrated them into their economy and culture.
