Today’s Final Jeopardy
A city of about 2.5 million people, since 1984 for political reasons it has been in the name of an Olympic Team
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Taipei
Final Jeopardy Explanation
Taipei is the capital city of Taiwan with a population of approximately 2.5 million people. However, its political status has been a matter of contention. Due to pressure from the People’s Republic of China and the One-China policy, the International Olympic Committee, does not recognize Taiwan as a separate entity from China.
As a result, since 1984, athletes from Taiwan have competed in the Olympics under the intentionally ambigious name “Chinese Taipei” rather than Taiwan. The name is a compromise that allows Taiwanese athletes to participate in the Olympics while sidestepping the political issue of Taiwan’s sovereignty as it does not imply statehood status.
