T.J. Tallie is an Associate Professor of African History based in San Diego, California. He is also the Director of Africana Studies and serves as the CEE Racial Equity Liaison. An American by nationality, he holds a PhD in History from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, as well as an MA and a BA from the University of California, San Diego. He joined his current department in the fall of 2018 and specializes in comparative settler colonial and imperial history, particularly focusing on South Africa. His scholarly work delves into the complexities of colonialism, gender, and racial identity, among other topics. He has published a book titled “Queering Colonial Natal: Indigeneity and the Violence of Belonging in Southern Africa.” His current research project, “Conjugal States,” examines the concept of monogamy in the context of white settler reproduction in various countries. He is also interested in expanding his research to include colonial practices and questions of sexuality in the Caribbean and Ireland.
