The locals of the island met them harshly and number of his crew members were taken captive, and difficult negotiations were launched to free them. Before he left for Spain, he and his group attended a mass in the old chapel to express their gratitude for their liberation.
The Santa Maria was also the name of the ship which led Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the New World, and it was the largest of the three Spanish ships used by Christopher Columbus in his first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492.
