20/20 “Kill or Be Killed” 2/3/23 Episode Summary

A beloved gymnastics coach named Chris Grover was shot and killed in their home, according to Nikki Addimando, a mother of two. Or did she shoot the victim in self-defense after years of physical and sexual abuse at Grover’s hands? Did she stage the crime scene and kill her partner in cold blood? The murder that rocked Poughkeepsie, New York, and the challenges victims of domestic violence face when dealing with the legal system are both covered in “20/20.” In the two-hour special, Addimando discusses her alleged abuse and the reasons she believed shooting Grover was the only course of action in an open forum for the first time on television with “Nightline” co-anchor Juju Chang.

The episode also features additional, exclusive interviews with Bella Leone, an ex-girlfriend of Grover, Michelle Horton, Addimando’s sister, Sarah Caprioli, his therapist, Garrard Beeney, his appellate lawyer, and Justine van der Leun, a journalist and “Believe Her” podcast host. Friday, February 3 (9:01–11:00 p.m. EST), “20/20” airs on ABC and is available the following day on Hulu.

In September 2017, American Nicole Addimando shot and killed her domestic partner in Poughkeepsie, New York. She is being held at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women after receiving a sentence of 19 years to life.

Addimando asserted that she had endured years of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her partner, Christopher Grover. Grover allegedly threatened her with the gun, so she allegedly shot him while he was sitting on their couch. She was found guilty of both criminal possession of a handgun and second-degree murder. She is qualified for a sentence reduction because she was a victim of domestic violence under a law that New York passed in 2019. But in February 2020, Judge Edward McLoughlin decided that her case did not qualify for a reduced sentence because, in his opinion, she had the option of leaving her abuser. An appeals court determined that Addimando should have been eligible for a reduced sentence under the Domestic Violence Survivors Act since his initial sentence.
