Final Jeopardy Explanation – Wednesday, February 8 2023
Aachen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia that is the westernmost city in Germany, bordering Belgium and the Netherlands to the west.
It was the first German city to be taken by the Western Allies during World War II, and the locals welcomed the soldiers as liberators when the German’s surrended on October 21, 1944.
What little of the city remained was destroyed—in some areas completely—during the fighting as a result of American artillery fire and demolitions carried out by the Waffen-SS defenders.
Even though the Germans capitulated, the tenacious defence they mounted severely hampered Allied plans for further advance into Germany.
