“Cistern” and “Reservoir” were substituted names for a secret invention, but the British preferred this less clumsy monosyllable
Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Monday, February 13 2023
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Tank
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Monday, February 13 2023
Before December 1915, “tanks” were called “landships” or “land cruisers,” and during their experimental stages, “caterpillar machine-gun destroyers.”
When writing the report on these machines, Colonel Ernest Swinton, who was involved in the development and adoption of these war machines, came to the realisation that using the names would reveal a secret that needed to be kept to himself. Colonel Swinton suggested the names “cistern,” “reservoir,” and “tank,” which all applied to the machine’s early stages of manufacture and had a steel-like structure. The name “tank” was selected because it was monosyllabic and less awkward.
