“Cistern” and “Reservoir” were substituted names for a secret invention, but the British preferred this less clumsy monosyllable
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Tank
Final Jeopardy Explanation
Up until December 1915, “tanks” were known as “landships” or “land cruisers,” as well as “caterpillar machine-gun destroyers,” during their experimental stages.
Colonel Ernest Swinton, who was involved in the development and adoption of these war machines, had the realisation that using the names would reveal a secret that needed to be kept when writing a report on these machines. The names “cistern,” “reservoir,” and “tank,” all of which were applicable to the steel-like structure of the machines in the earlier stages of manufacture, were proposed by Colonel Swinton. The name “tank” was chosen because it was less clumsy and also monosyllabic.
