On March 13, 1986, the European Space Agency’s Giotto robotic spacecraft mission studied Halley’s Comet as it passed by. It was the first spacecraft to observe a comet up close at a distance of 596 kilometres and successfully approached Halley’s nucleus.

Giotto di Bondone, an artist of the Early Italian Renaissance, inspired the name of the spacecraft as Halley’s Comet, which he had seen in 1301, served as the inspiration for his painting Adoration of the Magi in the Scrovegni Chapel, in which it is shown as the star of Bethlehem.
