Today’s Final Jeopardy 3/6/2023 (U.S. History) – Monday, March 6 2023

An 1869 presidential pardon was granted to this man, due in part to a plea by the Medical Society of Harford County, Maryland

Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Monday, March 6 2023

The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Samuel Mudd

Final Jeopardy Explanation – Monday, March 6 2023

Samuel Alexander Mudd Sr. was an American physician who was imprisoned for conspiring with John Wilkes Booth to assassinate Abraham Lincoln.

Mudd worked as a doctor and tobacco farmer in Southern Maryland. His business suffered greatly as a result of the Civil War, particularly after Maryland abolished slavery in 1864. That year, he met Booth, who was plotting Lincoln’s kidnapping, and Mudd was seen with three of the conspirators. His exact role in the plot, however, is unknown.

Booth fatally shot Lincoln on April 14, 1865, but was injured while fleeing the scene. In the early hours of April 15, he rode to Mudd’s house for surgery on his fractured leg. For the next 24 hours, Mudd did not notify the authorities of Booth’s visit. This fact, along with his various story changes during interrogation, appeared to link him to the crime. A military commission found Mudd guilty of aiding and conspiring in a murder and sentenced him to life in prison.

Mudd was pardoned and released from prison in 1869 by President Andrew Johnson, following a petition from the Medical Society of Harford County, Maryland, of which Mudd was an Associate.
