Angelina Fernandes, then only 11 years old, will never forget the tumultuous scene that unfolded at her house on the evening of May 7, 2014. When she awoke, she discovered Stephanie Wagner’s fiancé, Andrew Wagner, being saved by neighbours. A knife wound to Wagner’s neck ultimately caused his death. The mother of Angelina was accused of murder. With 48 HOURS correspondent Peter Van Sant, both women speak aloud for the first time and discuss Stephanie Fernandes’ tumultuous and complicated relationship with Wagner.
Twenty-year-old Angelina recalls her mother’s anguish that evening. “Help me, someone help me,” Angelina yelled from the outside, and then she started sobbing and screaming.
The night Wagner died, Stephanie Fernandes claims she was forced to defend herself. Fernandes tells Van Sant, “I never, never, and never would kill someone, harm someone in that way, on purpose. “I will adore him forever.”
Melissa Wagner, Andrew Wagner’s mother, vehemently defended her son in court. “[Fernandes] stole Andrew’s happiness and love of life… She stripped Andrew of his honour and respect for himself. She took Andrew’s life when there was absolutely nothing left for her to take.
