Stockholm syndrome is a psychological bond that hostages form with their captors. It is named after Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, which was founded in 1252.
The Norrmalmstorg Robbery was a hostage situation involving a bank that gave rise to the phrase “Stockholm syndrome.” It occurred in August 1973 at Norrmalmstorg Square in Stockholm, Sweden, and was the country’s first live television broadcast of a criminal incident.
Because the hostages felt sympathy for their captors, there is academic interest in the subject. The Swedish term Norrmalmstorgssyndromet (the Norrmalmstorg syndrome), later known as the Stockholm syndrome, was coined by criminologist Nils Bejerot. Despite Olsson’s threats, the hostages never used force against the cops or each other.
