The Bering Strait is a short waterway that connects Asia and North America. It was established 10,000-15,000 years ago when sea levels increased following the last Ice Age. It is quite shallow compared to other ocean passes, with an average depth of only approximately 150 feet. The Bering Strait was named after the Danish explorer Vitus Bering, who sailed through it in 1728 as part of a Russian Empire expedition. Today, the Bering Strait is an important trade route as well as a migratory route for whales and birds. The region is also noteworthy in terms of indigenous culture and history, having been inhabited for thousands of years by diverse indigenous peoples.
