Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who joined an Islamist group and rose to become the mayor of Istanbul during a time when Turkey was ruled by a secular elite, was born during that period. But because Turkey’s constitution forbids the blending of religion and politics, Erdogan is jailed and permanently barred from holding elective office when the party he belongs to is disbanded.
