Billy Joel references to his 1989 smash song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” in today’s Final Jeopardy. He wrote the music before the lyrics in this song, which is not his typical method.
In an interview with Billboard, when asked “When you were writing songs did you write the music first?”, Joel replied “Always. I think the one time I didn’t write the music first was “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and I think it shows, because it’s terrible musically. It’s like a mosquito buzzing around your head.”.
