Li Peng championed the Three Gorges Dam project in 1992. This colossal hydroelectric dam resulted in more than a million people being displaced due to extensive reservoir flooding.
The Three Gorges Dam holds the record for the world’s largest power station by installed capacity. Its construction started in 1994, two years following Li Peng’s endorsement, and the structure was finished by 2006, with all aspects fully operational by 2012.
Situated on the Yangtze River in central China, the main purposes of the dam are electricity production, enhancement of the river’s cargo capacity, and downstream flood reduction by offering flood storage space.
Nevertheless, the project has been rife with controversy. The reservoir’s flooding led to the displacement of roughly 1.3 million individuals, causing significant socio-economic alterations. Historic locations were inundated and concerns over the dam’s environmental impact on the local ecosystem were raised. Furthermore, debates continue about whether the benefits of flood control and power generation surpass the substantial socio-environmental impacts.
