Li Peng championed the Three Gorges Dam project in 1992. This massive hydroelectric gravity dam led to the displacement of over a million people due to the extensive flooding of the reservoir.

The Three Gorges Dam is the world’s largest power station in terms of installed capacity. The construction began in 1994, two years after Li Peng’s endorsement, and was completed in 2006, with the entire project being fully functional by 2012.

Located on the Yangtze River in central China, the dam’s primary functions are to generate electricity, increase the river’s shipping capacity, and reduce the potential for floods downstream by providing flood storage space.

However, the project has been steeped in controversy. The flooding of the reservoir displaced about 1.3 million people, leading to significant social and economic changes. Historic sites were submerged, and environmental concerns were raised over the dam’s impact on the local ecosystem. Additionally, there has been ongoing debate about whether the benefits of flood control and power generation outweigh the significant social and environmental costs.
