Native Americans called it Okwa-ta, or “wide water”; Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville would rename it for a countryman

Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Friday, June 16 2023

The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Lake Pontchartrain

Final Jeopardy Explanation – Friday, June 16 2023

Lake Pontchartrain, located in southeastern Louisiana, is a broad estuary named “Okwa-ta” by the region’s Native American tribes, which translates to “wide water.” This name was later replaced by French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville, who named the lake after Louis Phélypeaux, the Comte de Pontchartrain and France’s Minister of Marine during d’Iberville’s exploration of the area.

With a spread of 630 square miles, Lake Pontchartrain is one of the largest inland bodies of water in the United States. The lake also houses the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, recognized by the Guinness World Records as the longest continuous bridge over water. The causeway consists of two parallel spans that reach a total length of approximately 24 miles.
