There has been a long-standing debate among hydrographers about whether the Bass Strait is considered a part of the Indian Ocean or the Pacific Ocean. While the International Hydrographic Organization identifies the Bass Strait as a component of the Indian Ocean, some other authorities classify it as a segment of the Pacific Ocean.
