Equatorial Guinea is the only country in Africa where Spanish is an official language. Equatorial Guinea gained independence from Spain in 1968.

Its official languages are Spanish, French, and Portuguese, but Spanish is the most widely spoken, making it unique among African countries. The country is situated on the west coast of Central Africa, with most of its territory lying between 1 and 2 degrees north latitude.
