Today’s Final Jeopardy 7/28/2023 (Word Origins) – Friday, July 28 2023
Theories on the origin of this, a style of journalism, include Cajun slang for unhinged jazz & Boston slang for a person on a bender
Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Friday, July 28 2023
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Gonzo
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Friday, July 28 2023
Gonzo journalism is a distinct journalistic style that melds the author and subject together, often blurring the lines between fiction and nonfiction. This style is typified by a subjective approach, first-person narrative, and the integration of the journalist’s personal emotions and experiences into the narrative.
The term “gonzo” has a couple of possible origins. One theory points to Cajun slang, where “gonzo” may have denoted a kind of jazz music that was wild and unrestrained. Another suggests it was Boston slang for an individual engaging in a spree or bender, often involving alcohol or other substances – this could reflect the unbridled, unconventional nature of gonzo journalism.
Hunter S. Thompson, an American journalist and author, is credited with popularizing this style of journalism. His book “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” is considered a quintessential example of gonzo journalism.
