Today’s Final Jeopardy 9/11/2023 (British Monarchs) – Monday, September 11 2023
The most recent British Monarch not to succeed a parent or a sibling was this ruler who succeeded an uncle
Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Monday, September 11 2023
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Queen Victoria
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Monday, September 11 2023
Queen Victoria was the most recent British monarch who succeeded an uncle, rather than a parent or sibling. She was the daughter of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Her father died when she was just eight months old, leaving her as the heir presumptive to the British throne.
She ascended to the throne in 1837 following the death of her uncle, King William IV, as she was his closest living legitimate heir. Victoria’s father, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, had died when she was a baby, and she had no siblings who survived to inherit the throne.
Queen Victoria’s reign lasted until her death in 1901, making her one of the longest-reigning British monarchs. Her reign is known as the Victorian Era and was a period of significant change and progress for Britain, including the expansion of the British Empire and advancements in industry and culture. It saw the expansion of the British Empire to its peak, covering about a quarter of the Earth’s landmass by the end of her time on the throne.
Queen Victoria’s personal life was marked by her deep love for her husband, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The couple had nine children, who went on to marry into various European royal families. After Prince Albert’s early death in 1861, Victoria entered a state of mourning and wore black for the rest of her life.
