Today’s Final Jeopardy 9/12/2023 (Mythological Places) – Tuesday, September 12 2023
“Paradise Lost” says it’s “abhorred” & “the flood of deadly hate” & in Dante’s “Inferno” it’s fed by a “gloomy brook”
Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Tuesday, September 12 2023
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: River Styx
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Tuesday, September 12 2023
The River Styx is a significant element in various mythologies and literary traditions, most prominently in Greek mythology and the works that explore themes of the afterlife, like Dante’s “Inferno” and Milton’s “Paradise Lost.” In Greek mythology, the Styx serves as the boundary between Earth and the Underworld, ruled by Hades. It is one of five rivers in Hades and is said to be so foul that even gods dare not to swear falsely by it.
In “Paradise Lost,” the Styx is described with words including “abhorred” and is associated with a “flood of deadly hate,” indicating its role as a boundary in Hell and emphasizing its detestable and ominous nature.
In contrast, in Dante’s “Inferno,” the Styx is portrayed as being fed by a “gloomy brook.” In this work, the river occupies the fifth circle of Hell and is where the wrathful and sullen are punished.
