The only dwarf planet located in the inner solar system, it’s named for an ancient deity of planting & harvests
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Ceres
Final Jeopardy Explanation
Ceres is the only dwarf planet located in the inner solar system. The name Ceres comes from the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships.
Ceres was the first dwarf planet to be discovered in 1801 and remains the largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. It has a diameter of about 940 kilometers (584 miles) and contains a significant amount of water ice.
Astronomers have been interested in Ceres because it could potentially hold clues to the solar system’s early history. The spacecraft Dawn, launched by NASA in 2007, reached Ceres in 2015 and provided data about its composition, topography, and bright spots in its craters that aroused scientific curiosity. These bright spots were later found to be salt deposits, possibly indicative of past, or even present, subsurface water activity.
