Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Puerto Rico
Final Jeopardy Explanation
Originally under Spanish rule, Puerto Rico is situated in the Caribbean within the Greater Antilles archipelago. While it never became fully independent, the island transitioned from Spanish to American control after the Spanish-American War of 1898, as stipulated by the Treaty of Paris. In its current status, Puerto Rico is an unincorporated U.S. territory. People born on the island are granted U.S. citizenship, yet their ability to participate in U.S. federal elections is restricted.
Despite not achieving independence, Puerto Rico does enjoy some level of self-governance. The island has its own constitution, approved in 1952, and its inhabitants can vote for a local governor and legislative body. Nonetheless, overarching authority is vested in the U.S. Congress, which means that federal laws take precedence over Puerto Rico’s local laws.
