The Final Jeopardy Answer is: New World Symphony
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Thursday, September 28 2023
Making its debut in New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1893, the Symphony No. 9 in E minor by Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, commonly referred to as the “New World Symphony,” was crafted during Dvořák’s residency in the U.S. The piece draws inspiration from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “The Song of Hiawatha,” among other sources.
This symphonic work is an amalgamation of traditional European musical styles and motifs influenced by American culture, such as African American spirituals and Native American tunes. Notably, the symphony is rich in emotional resonance and intricate orchestration. The Largo movement stands out, featuring the iconic “Goin’ Home” theme. Though often attributed to traditional spirituals, this melody was actually penned by Dvořák.
Since its initial performance, the composition has enjoyed sustained popularity and has been adapted for a variety of mediums, from cinematic scores to popular tunes.
