Andrew Johnson and Harry S. Truman issued their first presidential proclamations declaring national days of mourning. Johnson assumed the presidency in April 1865 following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and declared a day of mourning for the fallen leader. Truman, on the other hand, became President in April 1945 after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt and similarly proclaimed a national day of mourning. These proclamations were issued 80 years apart, both in the month of April, marking solemn moments in American history.
