Today’s Final Jeopardy 10/18/2023 (Natural Landmarks) – Wednesday, October 18 2023
The Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition happened upon it in 1870 & named it for the regularity of its activity
Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Wednesday, October 18 2023
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Old Faithful
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Wednesday, October 18 2023
In 1870, the Washburn-Langford-Doane expedition discovered a geyser in what would later become Yellowstone National Park and named it Old Faithful due to its regular eruptions. This natural wonder has a consistent eruption schedule, occurring approximately every 44 to 125 minutes. Scientists have kept a close eye on its activities, gleaning important information about geothermal processes. When it erupts, Old Faithful can propel boiling water up to 185 feet into the air for durations ranging from 1.5 to 5 minutes. The amount of energy unleashed during these eruptions is extraordinarily high, akin to detonating thousands of pounds of dynamite.
Although Old Faithful is only one among Yellowstone’s over 10,000 thermal features, it stands out because of its regularity. Yellowstone became the world’s first national park in 1872, a development that came just two years after the geyser’s discovery by the Washburn-Langford-Doane team.
