Today’s Final Jeopardy 11/2/2023 (Ancient Geography) – Thursday, November 2 2023
Britain became an island less than 10,000 years ago, as warming weather & melting ice filled in this sea
Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Thursday, November 2 2023
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: North Sea
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Thursday, November 2 2023
Britain became separated from mainland Europe when melting ice caused the waters to rise and fill in the North Sea, specifically forming the English Channel.
The area that is now the English Channel was originally a land bridge that connected modern-day Britain to the European continent. This land bridge, often referred to as “Doggerland,” allowed early humans and animals to migrate between what are now the British Isles and mainland Europe.
However, as the ice continued to melt, enormous amounts of water from melting glaciers flowed into the North Sea basin. Over time, the rising waters breached through the Weald-Artois chalk range, a ridge that had held back the waters from flooding the basin. The process was likely accelerated by massive water outflows from glacial lakes.
The inundation gradually eroded the land bridge, and by around 8,000 years ago, the English Channel had fully formed, turning Britain into an island.
