At Leicester Cathedral in March 2015, the Archbishop of Canterbury led a religious ceremony for this deceased English monarch
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Richard III
Final Jeopardy Explanation
The Archbishop of Canterbury led a religious ceremony at Leicester Cathedral in March 2015 for King Richard III. Richard III was the last king of the House of York and the last of the Plantagenet dynasty. His remains were discovered beneath a parking lot in Leicester in 2012. After being positively identified, he was reinterred with a ceremonial burial at Leicester Cathedral in 2015.
Richard III reigned over England from 1483 to 1485. He has been a controversial figure in English history, often depicted as a tyrant and murderer, especially in Shakespeare’s play “Richard III”.
His rule came to an abrupt end at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, where he was defeated by the forces of Henry Tudor, who then became King Henry VII. This battle effectively ended the Wars of the Roses, a series of civil wars for control of the English throne fought between the rival Houses of Lancaster and York.
Richard III’s burial after the battle was hurried and without much ceremony. Over the centuries, the exact location of his grave was lost to history until the remarkable discovery in 2012 in Leicester.
