Today’s Final Jeopardy
This African Capital renamed an area Mexico Square to honor Mexico’s WWII-era support of its sovereignty during Italian occupation
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Addis Ababa
Final Jeopardy Explanation
The African capital that renamed an area to Mexico Square in recognition of Mexico’s support during Italy’s occupation is Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
Mexico was one of only five nations to openly condemn Italy’s invasion and subsequent occupation of Ethiopia during the pre-World War II period, which began in 1935 when Fascist Italy invaded Ethiopia. This conflict was part of the broader aggressive expansionist policy of Italy’s dictator Benito Mussolini.
The Mexican government, led by President Lázaro Cárdenas at the time, was vocal in its support for Ethiopia, calling for sanctions against Italy and advocating for Ethiopian sovereignty and independence. Mexico’s stance was based on principles of anti-imperialism and respect for national sovereignty, which were central to Mexican foreign policy following the Mexican Revolution.
This act of solidarity was significant for Ethiopia, and renaming the square was a gesture to honor the support Mexico provided for Ethiopian sovereignty.
