Today’s Final Jeopardy 11/23/2023 (Science Etymology) – Thursday, November 23 2023

First detected in the sun’s atmosphere in 1868, it got its name from an old word for sun

Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Thursday, November 23 2023

The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Helium

Final Jeopardy Explanation – Thursday, November 23 2023

First detected in the sun’s atmosphere in 1868, the element Helium was named after “Helios,” the Greek word for sun.

Helium was identified independently by French astronomer Jules Janssen and English astronomer Joseph Norman Lockyer during a solar eclipse. They observed a yellow spectral line in the sunlight and realized it was due to an element not previously known on Earth. The name Helium is thus derived from the Greek mythology, where Helios was the personification of the sun, reflecting the element’s solar origins.

Helium is the second-lightest element and has the lowest boiling and melting points of all the elements, making it ideal for use in cryogenics and in superconducting magnets like those used in MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) machines. It is also used as a shielding gas in arc welding, in pressurizing and purging systems in the aerospace industry, and for inflating balloons and airships.
